  4.     Hope -- and conspiracy theories -- can nurture the most
  5. enduring myths. Although after a decade of intense investigation
  6. the United States still has no firm evidence that American
  7. servicemen survive in Vietnam, a new report released last week
  8. has rekindled the emotional issue once again. Prepared at the
  9. behest of North Carolina's Republican Senator Jesse Helms, a new
  10. special minority study from the Senate Foreign Relations
  11. Committee asserts that a 1974 government analysis concluded that
  12. "several hundred living POW/MIAs were still held captive in
  13. Southeast Asia." The Pentagon categorically denied the
  14. existence of the analysis. "While we have yet to find conclusive
  15. evidence of the existence of live prisoners," said a Pentagon
  16. statement, "we cannot rule out the possibility . . . and we are
  17. pledged to take appropriate action should evidence be obtained."
